2010 - Queen Gallery ( Toronto - Canada)
This exhibition showcases all new artwork that I have made since I have left Iran. All of the work has been made in the short period (about five months) since I have been here. This work was inspired by my reflections, often in my bed, as I am drifting off to sleep, on my memories and the mystery of the future. I don’t know what the future holds for me and as I lay there thinking about it, I draw. Although I do not have my studio or my equipment, and the work was all made in unfamiliar conditions, I seem to have found the best of my imagination and creativity.
Because I have suddenly found myself in Canada, in completely different circumstances, I feel like I am suspended between hope and anxiety.I have come from a country where human rights and democracy are not a priority, to a country where everyone is allowed their say. Adjusting to this difference in culture is challenging and it’s hard to abandon the way of life you were born into and grew up with. And I miss my friends and family and the good times and familiarity in general. It is natural that adapting to a new way of life will take time and occasionally be very difficult. This is where my art brings me some peace and relaxation. I have sought refuge in my past and my wishes for the future; my memories and dreams and pain and joy, and these paintings are the result.
Our lives are great gifts and I just try to live the best way I can.
